Audio and video surveillance systems could be installed on electric buses in a US city if the proposals are given the green light.

According to the Independent Mail, councillors in Anderson, South Carolina will consider the plans this week.

If approved, they will see surveillance equipment added to Electric City Transit buses to provide real time viewing while the vehicles are in motion.

A staff summary received by the council said the technology would enable officials to monitor the speed and routes of the buses to ensure drivers are adhering to the correct safety measures.

The CCTV systems would be funded by a federal stimulus grant given to Anderson in June last year. The cost of the equipment and the associated DVR software is believed to be around $28,000 (£17,265).

Meanwhile, in the UK, London mayor Boris Johnson has put a reduction in crime on public transport in the capital partly down to the expansion of CCTV cameras on the Tube and bus networks.
